One debate that we’ve seen quite a bit since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in regards to face mask benefits is that of the use of face masks and whether or not they are actually beneficial.
The first spark of the debate was whether or not those in the healthcare sphere should be wearing N-95 masks all the time. The debate then moved into whether or not all individuals should be wearing masks in public, especially considering the fact that masks were running low in supply.
The debate quickly became an emotional one, considering the potential of life-threatening qualities of the virus.
What are the Benefits of Masks if Any?
Public health officials have been debating the recommendation of whether or not all individuals should be wearing masks for protection. As of this past month, the CDC has put out a clear recommendation saying that all individuals must wear masks when going out into public spaces.
The main question, of course, is
“Will I protect myself from becoming infected with COVID-19 if I wear a mask out in public?”
To answer that, we must look at why masks are so important for healthcare professionals.
Medical personnel are in very close contact with patients who are infected, many of which they are in contact with for prolonged periods. This means that these healthcare workers are directly exposed to the virus.
Of course, it is also important to note that masks are only a part of the overall protective suit that healthcare professionals wear. The full list of protective gear include gowns, gloves, and face shields to help protect the eyes.
The ability to put that equipment on and take it off without accidentally infecting oneself requires a fair amount of training.
The idea of masks is that they are made to create a small amount of protection for the nose and the mouth if a person expels any droplets within two meters of the user. While the initial thought or motivation was to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within specific communities, it soon shifted to protecting other people from those who come in contact with the person wearing it.
Essentially, the idea of wearing a mask moved from a self-interest mindset to an altruistic one.
Wearing A Face Mask Do Provide Benefits
By wearing a face mask out in public, you are not only protecting yourself from others who might be infected nearby, but you are also protecting others from yourself, as you might be infected without even knowing it.
The evidence for this method comes from the standard way we treat those who have respiratory infections. These respiratory infections include the common cold and flu.
There are many different types of masks on the market right now, including re-usable cloth masks, surgical masks, and respirator masks. It is important to understand the differences between these to figure out which one is right for you and your family.
